Maria Maier is on to time, not to "zeitgeist".
During her work stays in and travels to foreign countries Maria Maier reveals with her camera worlds in between which remain strangely abstract even appearing precisely defined on a photographical level. These twilight zones connect fact and appearance, reality and artificiality in an irritating way. Maria Maier is fascinated by the ephemeral character of the urban scenes, the motives she chooses. Back home she edits her shots using different techniques and always working in series. That's how her works get a new, deeper meaning. In the case of Maria Maier we are not dealing with pure photography, but with painterly pictures. Above all the artist dedicates her attention to evanescence and transcience, time as social phenomenon. Her works can even be read as a serialized investigation on time.
